From 17 October to 15 November 2026, Umbria celebrates the arrival of its freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil with the 29th edition of Frantoi Aperti in Umbria.
Frantoi Aperti – literally “Open Olive Mills” – is not a festival held in one square. It is a regional event spread across working olive mills, historic villages, art towns and olive-growing landscapes. For five autumn weekends, visitors can see how Umbrian olive oil is produced, meet local growers and millers, and taste the new season’s oil shortly after pressing.
The event is one of the most interesting answers to the question “What can you do in Umbria in autumn?” It combines food, rural traditions, culture and outdoor activities at the moment when the region’s olive harvest is at its busiest.
The five weekends of Frantoi Aperti 2026
The event runs across five consecutive weekends:

- 31 October-1 November
- 7-8 November
- 14-15 November 2026
Different mills, towns and activities may participate on different dates. The complete daily programme has not yet been published, so visitors should check the official calendar before planning a specific journey.
What happens during Frantoi Aperti?
The main attraction is the opportunity to enter working olive mills during the pressing season. Visitors can discover how olives become extra virgin olive oil and taste olio nuovo – the intensely aromatic new oil produced immediately after the harvest.
The 2026 edition is expected to combine olive-mill experiences with:
- Guided olive-oil tastings
- Visits to working mills
- Walks through olive groves
- Cultural and artistic events
- Outdoor activities and cycling routes
- Food experiences in villages and mills
- Meetings with local producers
Among the initiatives already announced are Evo & Art Experiences, tours exploring the different production areas of Umbria DOP olive oil, a motorcycle tour of participating mills, the Frantoi Aperti Trail Run and La Grande Pedalata along the Assisi–Spoleto Olive Belt. Why visit an olive mill during the harvest?
Olive oil is available throughout the year, but visiting during the harvest offers a different experience. You can smell the freshly crushed olives, watch the pressing process and taste oil when its aromas are at their most vivid.
Fresh Umbrian olive oil can be surprisingly green, grassy and peppery. That slight bitterness or tickle in the throat is not a defect: it is part of the character of newly pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Frantoi Aperti therefore offers much more than a food tasting. It provides a direct introduction to one of Umbria’s most important agricultural traditions and to the people who continue it.
Exploring Frantoi Aperti from Spoleto
Spoleto is a practical base for exploring the olive-producing area of central Umbria. The city lies close to the Fascia Olivata Assisi–Spoleto, the historic olive-growing landscape extending through places such as Campello sul Clitunno, Trevi, Foligno and Spello.
A car is normally the most convenient option because Frantoi Aperti takes place across numerous towns and countryside locations rather than at one central venue. Visitors can combine a morning at an olive mill with lunch in a village, a countryside walk or an afternoon exploring Spoleto.
Participating mills and local events near Spoleto must still be confirmed in the final 2026 programme.
For 2026, the Treno dell’Olio has not yet been officially confirmed.
In 2025, the special Espresso Assisi operated from Rome with stops including Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, Spello and Assisi, offering guided olive-oil tastings onboard on selected Sundays.
